About an hour later, officers responded to reports that a 19-year-old woman had been assaulted near the hospital and chased inside by individuals armed with machetes. The woman and several friends sought shelter in a security office, where staff secured the door. Police say the offenders brandished machetes in the public waiting area before fleeing in a white Holden Commodore.
The white Commodore was later spotted and pursued north of the town, but the chase was terminated for safety reasons. Earlier in the morning, officers had received several sightings of the same white Holden with occupants believed to be armed with machetes around Alice Springs CBD.
A police dog located the car in bushland north of the town at approximately 9:15 a.m. Five males, aged 14 to 19, were subsequently taken into custody and remained detained by Sunday afternoon while investigators consider charges.
