Mbadi urges ODM to spell out their political stance amid unity concerns
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has called on dissenting leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to clearly state their political positions. He notes that internal disagreements have persisted for years but were once kept quiet by Raila Odinga’s influence.
Speaking on February 17, 2026, at a press briefing with the Luo Council of Elders, Mbadi said the elders’ top priority is preserving unity within the Luo community and within ODM itself.
“I believe the elders’ primary concern is the unity of the Luo community first, followed by the unity of ODM,” Mbadi stated. “The tensions we’re seeing today did not begin yesterday. They began while Raila was alive, though they were muted.”
Mbadi pointed out that disagreements over cooperation with President William Ruto had already been voiced by party officials, including ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
“This talk of not supporting President William Ruto by the party’s SG existed even when Raila was alive; it was just muted,” Mbadi said, adding that some leaders hesitated to speak openly at that time.
He also referenced James Orengo and Babu Owino, noting that they had previously shown reluctance to engage with the current administration.
“In Kenya, there are essentially two political blocs,” Mbadi argued. “If you don’t want to work with Ruto, who do you want to work with? Do you want to align with Wamunyoro (Rigathi Gachagua) and the rest?”
Mbadi urged anyone with opposing views to present their arguments to party leadership and the elders. He warned that divisive political statements could escalate tensions, citing a recent Kitengela incident that reportedly resulted in the death of a Luo individual.
“We are asking you to come forward, to try to persuade us,” Mbadi added, stressing the need for open dialogue and accountability.
