Tom Pidcock: UAE Team Emirates-XRG rode the perfect race (2026)

Bold statement: the UAE Team Emirates-XRG block executed a flawless strategy, and Tom Pidcock’s strong start still couldn’t outpace them. But here’s where it gets controversial: the race’s wind conditions allegedly shaped the outcome more than raw power alone. And this is the part most people miss when analyzing Valencia’s opening stage.

Rewritten version:
Tom Pidcock, riding for Pinarello-Q36.5, had to accept defeat on the opening day of the Tour of Valencia, where UAE Team Emirates-XRG demonstrated a cunning, well-timed performance. In the end, Pidcock finished with the main group of favorites, proving he still had the legs to contest the sprint on the final, brief climb.

Marc Soler seized overall victory after breaking clear midway through the shortened 90-kilometer course, accompanied by his Danish teammate Julius Johansen. Soler, a time-trial specialist, crossed the line 19 seconds ahead of the field, with Soler visibly elated by the win.

“I’m really happy with the result and the team spirit,” Soler said. “Julius and I worked well together and kept pushing. It wasn’t easy with the wind.” He also thanked teammate Tim Wellens for his role in disrupting the chase behind them.

“Tim did a fantastic job in the group and helped us a lot. The team was great all day. I’m happy to wear the leader’s jersey. We’ll see what the wind does tomorrow and what awaits us,” Soler added.

Pidcock’s race plan included a disciplined performance from the outset, finishing third at a gap of 40 seconds to Soler and extending a 20-second lead over a chasing subset that included Wellens, Pello Bilbao, Matej Mohorič, and Mathyas Kopecký. Pidcock remained upbeat about his season debut: “Honestly, I’m really happy with my legs and how I felt in my first race. I can’t complain, though UAE rode a smarter race.”

The Briton appeared eager to rebound after the long Chilean preparation window. Throughout the day he fought gusting winds and a challenging course. He noted: “Our radio communication wasn’t ideal, and just as Wellens launched his move I was taking a gel. Once the gap opened, we couldn’t close it in time. UAE rode the perfect race.”

Pidcock also reflected on the wind’s impact: “With that wind, I hoped we could claw back in the final 25 kilometers, but it ended up leaning toward a tailwind, making it harder to close the gap.”

Would you agree that wind or team tactics were the decisive factor in this stage, or do you think Pidcock’s form showed promise for the rest of the race? Share your thoughts in the comments.
